How does an AI flashcard maker work?
To make flashcards in Recall, save a PDF, article, video, or note, open it, go to the Quiz tab, and click Generate Questions. Recall generates questions from the content, including two-sided flashcards you rate as knew or didn't know, and schedules them with spaced repetition.
Save a video, podcast, or PDF
Add a PDF, an article, a YouTube video, a podcast, a Google Slides deck, or a note you write. That save is what the flashcards are made from.
Generate the flashcards
Open the save and choose Generate Questions. Pick flashcards, or add multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, short answer, matching, or ordering.
Check and edit the flashcards
Read each flashcard against the source. Edit the question, the answer, or the options. Delete a flashcard, or write one yourself.
Review the flashcards on a schedule
A correct answer comes back later. A miss comes back in about a day. Five correct answers in a row move a card out to about three months.
See how Recall makes flashcards from a save
Generate questions from something you saved, then review them. A miss comes back sooner than a card you already know.
What types of flashcards and questions can you generate?
A classic flashcard, plus multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, short answer, matching, and ordering. You pick the types before Recall starts. A printable design is not one of them.
A classic flashcard
One side is the prompt. The other side is the answer. You rate whether you knew it, and that rating sets the next review.
Quiz questions
Multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, and short answer. A hint and an explanation can sit on the question.
Matching and ordering
Matching pairs related ideas. Ordering checks a sequence, such as the steps in a process.
Keep the source
How is this different from a deck you type?
Most flashcard generators give you a deck and forget the source. Here is how Recall compares on the source, the next review, exports, and price.
| Feature | Recall | A one-off deck |
|---|---|---|
| Capture | ||
What you start with | A saved PDF, article, video, podcast, slide deck, or note | A file you upload and leave |
Who writes the cards | Recall generates them. You can edit any card | You type them, or a tool exports a deck |
| Memory | ||
The source | Stays on the flashcard, so you can open it | Often gone once the deck is made |
The next review | A miss returns in about a day | Study once, or export the deck |
| Organization | ||
A printable layout | Not this. Recall is for review | Design tools and some generators |
| Limits | ||
What it covers | No Anki file export. You review the flashcards in Recall | Varies by tool |
| Value | ||
Price to start | Free to start, with unlimited saves and 10 AI summaries a month | Varies, and many cap or charge per use |

You still check the cards
An AI flashcard maker can miss a point, or write a card that sounds right and is wrong. The source is there so you can check a flashcard before you trust the deck.
Open a flashcard's source
Each question shows the save it came from. Open that save when a card looks off.
Edit or delete a flashcard
Change the wording, or remove the card. You can also write a card the generator skipped.
Leave a flashcard off the schedule
Unscheduling a question takes it off future reviews. The save stays in your knowledge base.
Why people make Recall part of their day

“After just a few months, Recall has become one of my most-used apps on both desktop and mobile. Frankly, I'd rather give up Microsoft Word than Recall.”

“I've tried practically every AI tool out there, and Recall is among the very few that I've actually found myself using. It has completely changed the way I study.”

“I didn't expect much from Recall. But it completely blew me away. It does everything NotebookLM does and also fills in all its shortcomings.”

“I run two parallel careers, which means staying current across rapidly evolving topics. Recall is the front door to my entire knowledge workflow.”

“I use Recall every day. It helps me quickly condense important information from thought leadership articles and educational YouTube videos. It's great to have a place where I can easily store this information knowing that I will come back to it again in the future. I've greatly developed as a founder and leader thanks to Recall.”

Jason Patel

“I've been building several second brains for years and whenever I see a new way to do it, I don't like changing because my other systems already work. But I'm always willing to try because you never know which one would be a drastic improvement on what you're already using. Recall is one of them.”

Dave Katague
